How I Want to Get Involved in The Panth

Lately, I have been thinking about how I can personally contribute and be active in the Sikh community. But seeing that I am restricted to a certain corner of the world (aka Texas), I find that there's not a lot I can do (or at least I'm not aware of the opportunities out there). So I'm posting about this to 1) get my thoughts jotted down and 2) to see if any of ya'll could help me or give me advice.

1. Interfaith Work
I really would like to educate other Texans about our religion (Sikhism). According to statistics, 60% of Americans know nothing about Sikh Americans. I could bet money that this number increases the further south you go. That is why I would like to go into public spaces (such as churches, public schools, etc.) and educate people on who we are and about our religion. Not to convert (we don't do that), but to combat ignorance about our faith. On top of that, I would like to invite other communities into our gurdwaras to expose them to our community and the ways things are run.

2. Assisting Converts
This is another thing that I am passionate about doing. It is not easy converting into Sikhi. Unlike Judaism, Christianity, Islam, etc., there are no classes or programs to help new converts transition into their new religious community or to learn more about their newfound faith. I want to change that. As someone who has transitioned (at least partly) into the Sikh community, I feel that it is my duty to help those along who are just starting their journey.

So yeah, those are the two ideas I have so far. I also have personal goals that people on Facebook have already seen. They are as follows:

1. Help with Nishan Sahib Seva (how I haven't done this yet, idk)
2. Attend an Agan Bhet ceremony
3. Be able to take my own hukamnama
4. Completely master Gurmukhi (80% of the way there; would help me accomplish number 3)
5. Learn more about Sikh history (I really struggle with this one)
6. Complete my Sikh book collection

So there you go. If any of ya'll could help me with any of the things listed above, your assistance is welcomed. Until then, I'll just keep plotting

Update (7/21/2018): This is still a BIG thing for me. And I'm working on some things now.

  1. Vjkk Vjkf penji. There is currently a Sikh 3d animation in pre-production about Mata Sahib Kaur Ji called Motherhood: The Journey of Mata Sahib Kaur. It is not for profit and has around 100 volunteers involved - blogs, endorsements, support videos. Blog seva could be something you get involved in and raising awareness in Texas. You can contact them on social media @MovieMotherhood :) Hope this helps
